Wells Fargo's $325 checking bonus, read closely

A mid-sized bonus with the widest written definition of a qualifying deposit among the major banks, and a lookback rule that is about prior bonuses rather than prior accounts.

LAST VERIFIED 2026-10-13
Wells Fargo Everyday Checking — $325
ENDS JAN 13, 2027
The offer
$325 for $1,000 or more in qualifying electronic deposits within 90 days of opening a new Everyday Checking account with the bonus code, by January 13, 2027. Applying online from the offer page attaches the code automatically; a branch opening needs the code emailed first. Verify at wellsfargo.com →
Qualifying deposit
"A deposit of funds, such as your salary, government benefit payment, or other income," posted to the account, that is (1) a direct deposit through the ACH network, (2) an instant payment over RTP or FedNow, or (3) an electronic credit to the debit card from a third-party payment service. Excluded: transfers from one account to another, mobile deposits, Zelle, and branch or ATM deposits. A deposit shown early by Early Pay Day counts only once it has posted.
Who is excluded
New consumer checking customers only. Anyone who received a bonus for a Wells Fargo consumer checking account in the past 12 months, Wells Fargo employees, W-8 filers, and Private Bank deposit accounts. One bonus per customer and per account; not combinable with other consumer deposit offers.
Payout
Within 30 days of meeting the requirements. The account must not be closed or restricted at payout. Wells Fargo notes it may close zero-balance accounts without notice.
The fee
$15 a month, avoided in any fee period by a $1,500 minimum daily balance; $5,000 in combined qualifying deposit and investment balances; $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits; a primary owner aged 17 to 24; or a qualifying military direct deposit. $25 minimum opening deposit.
Tax
Reported as income. Backup withholding applies where required.

The widest definition on the street

Most banks define a qualifying direct deposit as payroll, pension, or government benefits and stop there. Wells Fargo's definition adds "or other income" and then lists three rails, including instant payments and debit-card credits, that the other majors exclude by name. What it rules out is a short list: internal transfers, Zelle, mobile and branch deposits. On paper, this is the most permissive language among the large banks, and reported results match it. How deposit classification works, and why the written definition is only part of the story, is its own page.

The lookback is unusual too. Where Bank of America and Chase ask whether you held an account, Wells Fargo asks whether you were paid a checking bonus in the last 12 months. The offer is still for new consumer checking customers, so a current account rules you out, but a Wells Fargo checking account closed years ago with no bonus attached does not.

The timeline

Net

$325 on $1,000 of deposits plus $1,500 parked for the fee waiver, roughly two months end to end. A small lane with an easy requirement, which is why it sits alongside a large lane rather than in its own month.

Which transfer Wells Fargo's system counts, and where to send it from, is the row that ships with the calendar.
